The Ma Kanwen Fund for the Study of Medical Exchanges between East and West
The Institute has recently established a fund for the study of medical exchanges between East and West in memory of the noted historian of Chinese medicine, Professor Ma Kanwen 馬堪溫 (1927-2016).
This was made possible by the generosity of Professor Ma’s family and their friends and colleagues, and that of Dr. Yu Weidong of the Wellspring Clinic for Holistic Medicine, Vancouver. The Fund will initially be used to support an annual Ma Kanwen Memorial Lecture to be held at the Institute.
Professor Ma was a pioneer of the study of the history of traditional Chinese medicine, working mainly at the newly founded Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing after 1950, where he made the acquaintance of Dr. Needham in 1958. In the 1980’s he and his family moved to the UK, and spent the rest of his career here, based mainly at the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at the University of London, working tirelessly to encourage awareness of the history of China’s rich medical traditions.
