The Library

Opening hours and searching for our collection’s holdings

THE LIBRARY IS OPEN from 10.00 to 16.30 on weekdays.

Visits are by appointment only.

Books may only be consulted in the library and are not borrowable under any circumstances. To enquire about using the library, please contact the Librarian, John P.C. Moffett, at the Institute address, or by email [jm10019@cam.ac.uk]

The library’s holdings of books, journals and pamphlets can be found using idiscover.

Some CJK records on idiscover include original script, but many still do not, so it is advised to search using romanisation. Chinese books are catalogued using non-concatenated Pinyin romanisation, that means that syllables are not aggregated, e.g Zhong-guo nong ye shi. The only exception is author names in the author field, e.g. Mao Zedong.

Note that personal names are not aggregated in the title field. Hyphens and capitalisation may be ignored when searching.

Japanese and Korean records follow Library of Congress conventions, the modified Hepburn system of romanisation for Japanese and McCune-Reischauer for Korean.

The library holds about 40,000 monograph and about 700 journal titles, though most of the journals date to before the advent of widespread online availability (list).

Donations are an essential contribution to the richness and depth of the collection. They may take the form of individual monographs, large sets of volumes, or off-prints. We are extremely grateful to all those institutions and individuals who have supported the library in this way, and would like to encourage all scholars working in the field to send their publications here to help maintain the collection as a world-class resource.
