Ho Peng Yoke Fellowship in the History of Science and Technology in China (2026-2027)
何丙郁中国科学技术史奖学金 (2026-2027年度)
A visiting fellowship in memory of Professor Ho Peng Yoke 何丙郁 (1926-2014) tenable at the Needham Research Institute (NRI) in Cambridge, UK is offered to scholars of any nationality researching the history of science and technology in China. Preference will be given to those working on a subject in line with Professor Ho’s own research interests, such as the history of mathematics, astronomy, alchemy, Daoism, gunpowder and materia medica, although the fellowship will be open to any subject relevant to the Institute’s concerns.
Applicants should hold a PhD degree and be employed in a full-time position in an academic institution, and may visit for a period of either 6 or 12 months during the academic year commencing in October 2026. Fellowships are to be completed by 30th September 2027. The scholarship funding takes the form of a grant of £1,500 per month to cover essential expenses such as subsistence, plus an allowance towards return international travel.
According to the cooperation agreement between the Needham Research Institute and Robinson College, scholars who receive the Ho Peng Yoke Scholarship will have the opportunity to apply for becoming a Bye-Fellow or other memberships of the College, thereby enjoying the benefits provided by the College.
The Fellows will be expected to play an active part in the academic activities of the Institute. On completion of their fellowships, they will provide a detailed report on the results of their research. Any publication resulting from the visit to the Institute should clearly acknowledge the support of ‘The Ho Peng Yoke Fellowship in the History of Science and Technology in China’.
Applicants are invited to send the following items to the address given below:
1. Curriculum Vitae with a full list of any publications.
2. A research proposal of approximately 1,500 words in length. This proposal should give a clear indication of the source material which the candidate proposes to use in his or her research together with an indication of the methodology to be followed. Candidates are asked to explain why a visit to the UK in general and the NRI in particular would be valuable for their research.
3. A copy of a certificate of the level of achievement in spoken and written English.
4. Letters of support from two academic referees.
5. Signed NRI_Data_Protection_Statement without which we will be unable to process the application
The closing date for 2026/2027 applications is 31st March 2026.

奖学金宗 旨
“何丙郁中国科学技术史奖学金”旨在支持研究中国科学与文明的发展历史以及中国对世界文明发展进程的贡献。研究主题上, 将优先考虑与何丙郁先生研究兴趣相关的领域,比如数学、天文学、炼丹术、火药、道教、术数和本草学。
奖学金标 准
何丙郁奖学金以补助金的形式发放,用于支付相应的研究开支、国际差旅和食宿费用,资助标 准为1500英镑/月(每年不超过2万英镑),另加一次国际往返旅费。 该奖学金拟支持1-2位学者在李约瑟研究所从事为期6-12个月的研究工作。
申请人资 格
申请人不限国籍、不限年龄。一般应已取得博士学位,并在大学或科研机构有工作职位。具有 良好英语能力的申请者将给予优先考虑。
与罗宾逊学院的联系
根据李约瑟研究所与罗宾逊学院达成的合作协议,获得何丙郁奖学金的学者将 有机会申请成为该学院的Bye-Fellow或其它形式的成员,从 而享受学院提供的相关礼遇。
相关要求
获选何丙郁奖学金的学者将参与李约瑟研究所、罗宾逊学院和剑桥大学相关院系的学术活动。 访学结束时,应向李约瑟研究所和罗宾逊学院提交详细的研究成果报告,并在发表相应的学术成果上标明获得了“何丙郁中国科学技术史奖学金”的资助。
